What is a clan name?

A clan name (isibongo in Zulu) is a hereditary family name passed down through the paternal line. It connects individuals to their ancestors and serves as a form of identity deeper than a surname.

Izithakazelo — praises

Each clan has izithakazelo: poetic praises recited to greet, honour, or invoke a person’s lineage. They encode history, values, and notable deeds of the ancestors.
